This is the story of Wiwanana, or how dialogue is the most powerful weapon for change.
A group of five Italians and a Mozambican are filming in the forests of northern Mozambique in search of five amateur actors. The goal is to take them to Italy, write a comedy show with them about health information and finally organize a tour in the villages of Northern Mozambique. Will they succeed despite cultural differences?
A group of Italians scour the villages in northern Mozambique looking for five talents with the dream of being actors. They are surprised at what they find: a community where illiteracy poor knowledge of the Portuguese language is widespread at the same time as the theatre is alive and a reason for gathering. There are many aspiring actors, who if selected will have the opportunity to leave the country for Italy to study acting techniques and write a stage play together with the Italian director Jacopo Fo. The team of Italians helped by the experience of Mozambican actor Félix Mambucho, choose to bring with them the comedy of Cuba, the presence of Arlete, the voice of Kedo, the sensuality of Safina, the smile of Ana Bela and the madness of Agostinho .
In the Umbrian hills, in the Libera University of Alcatraz, together with Jacopo Fo and other masters of the theatre, the actors will start the project’s mission: to write a show to take to Mozambican villages that communicates to the local population awareness of good health and food practices, especially those related to motherhood and infant care.
The actors will have to deal with a working method that will force them to come to terms with themselves and their dreams. At the same time, the Italian group come into contact with an approach to life which they will have to rely on in the hope of completing the project and carrying out the theatre tour. All this is Wiwanana: a journey between Italy and Mozambique, a story of the passion for theatre as an instrument of emancipation and dialogue between different cultures.
